3 Foil Quiver Challenge – February 2025
Author: Jon Mann
Continuing on from my last post – here’s a quick recap of the foils I decided to use in Feb:
- High wind foil: 720S. Wanted a surfy foil and to challenge my paddle up a bit more.
- Mid range: 770R. I chose it as my mid range foil as I wanted to continue where I left off with this foil as my go to foil for DW.
- Big foil: 980S. One of my favourite foils in the Code range for sure after the 850S
- Bonus foil: For dock starts and flatwater paddle up training sessions I will probably use the 1300S though
Another thing that happened this month is that I got a new proto board from Appletree. 7’4” x 18.5” 105L and I’m super happy with it. In the past I’ve always said if I was to have one board to DW everywhere with, it would probably be those dims – so I was stoked when I opened up the box to see that Jorrit had shaped me a proto board with those to test! A few new tweaks to the shape and a few small construction improvements mean this board is crazy stiff and responsive (probably stiffer than some mainstream brands’ prone boards…) and I’m really stoked with it. I haven’t actually noticed any negatives in terms of paddle up switching to a smaller board (I haven’t really used any really small foils with it though) and its super fun to ride when on foil.
So, how was another month of ‘limited’ quiver options? Well I’ll start with the slightly less positive. We’ve had quite a few light wind days so I haven’t had a good thorough run out of the quiver. This is good and bad as I did want to do a bit more underfoiled foiling, but I’d rather be underfoiled by sizing down a foil rather than the conditions being so crap. This means I ended up using my ‘bonus foil’ option quite a bit unfortunately. With light side-offshore wind, the bumps close to shore are really small and low energy before you get out to the deeper water where the fetch is better. I also didn’t get the chance to use my 720S to DW and the combination of a distinct lack of decent surf at moments where I could foil (weekend warrior life) meant I didn’t even get a chance to use it at all.
On the plus side, with the lighter winds I had a good chance to use the 980S and 770R in slightly more under-foiled conditions which has been great and was also my goal.
- 980S: We had a run of east wind which is offshore on the coast, but does work for a really nice lake run with decent fetch. I was reminded why the 980S is such a great and easy to use downwind foil and why it was my favourite (until I got a 850S). I never felt close to its low end, super easy to paddle up and foil and it’s so nice to surf around on lake bumps with this foil.
- 770R: With not that many north sea runs without the Bonus foil I was stoked when I did get the chance to take this foil out. Paddle ups even in lighter conditions didn’t seem to be a big issue and having been on the S series foils for the last few months the added glide of the R series let me be a bit lazier with line choice as it just seems to like to glide forever when put on the right bump even when underfoiled.
Using the 770R (one of my favourites) and seeing the uptake on the Leaderboard I’m super keen to get back on the R series again and work on going a bit faster, but with less effort. I definitely think using predominantly the S series for the last few months has made my lines better and my flow smoother. So now to see if I can carry that back to the R series and leverage their strengths to find faster lines. That means my quiver for March will be 680R, 770R, 860R and 960R. I may make exceptions for prone and wing and bring out the 850S and the 720S, but for DW it will be R series only. As always, feel free to ping me with any questions or feedback you have!
